SOMBA K'E/YELLOWKNIFE - George Lessard, who has been volunteering as one of CBC North's "Your Take" blogger, said he has been "permanently banned" from Sandy Lee's Conservative Party Facebook page.

Terry Halifax, a Beaufort-Delta Conservative campaign committee member, said he took issue with Lessard's new media coverage. He reported his concerns in a letter to CBC's ombudsman stating Lessard's coverage is biased, citing "condescending and disparaging remarks" about party candidate Sandy Lee. As one of the administrators of the Conservative Facebook page, Halifax banned Lessard.

"He joined our Facebook page and started openly engaging a debate on the page and posting some one-sided, in my view, views of the campaign," said Halifax. "I just don't think that there is a place for that in publicly-funded journalism ... I just wanted the CBC to take notice that we take offence to that."

Lessard said Halifax has a right to his opinion and has a right as a citizen to contact the corporation's ombudsman.

"I just find it rather odd that a political party, which is trying to garner as many votes as possible, closes its group to any one voter," said Lessard.

He said it is an "intolerable way" to treat voters.

"I am not a paid journalist from CBC. This is about just gathering people's opinions. I was asking for opinions on their side ... Well, the door got slammed in my face. I didn't like that very much," he said.

Subject: [altnorth-nt] Rally 8am MONDAY Apr 18 - 'Where is Harper'? - Meet at Yellowknife Inn

Stephen Harper has arrived in YK... but there will be NO PUBLIC EVENT.
So it's up to us to create one.
If you have something to say to Harper, meet in front of the Yellowknife Inn, Monday (April 18) at 8:00 am.
We are not sure whether Harper is actually staying at the Inn (conflicting insider info says he is booked at the Explorer), so the plan is to do a wandering rally asking the question:  "WHERE IS HARPER?"   "WHERE IS DEMOCRACY?"  "WHERE IS... (fill in the blank... eg. public health care; funding for housing, action on climate change, etc, etc)
We would like it to be fun, so wear a fun costume if you can.  One option could be an 'ethnic' costume (since Harper is so anxious to meet the 'ethnics' in every town he visits) - this could involve anything from a kilt to lederhosen to classic northern attire.  Or the idea has been floated of dressing up as a zombie with a sign saying 'Return of the Undead Democracy'.  The idea is to be creative, have fun, and attract attention.
PLEASE BRING MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS if you have them.  eg. fiddles, guitars, percussion.
CBC television is planning to cover the event at 8 am.  Also, we will be on the CBC morning radio before the event tomorrow.  So we need lots of people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

#elxn41 #yzf #nwt #CdnPoli @nwtsandylee's Terry Halifax: "Biased Reportage with CBC North"

Dear Mr. Lapointe,

I’m writing over my concern of political bias from the CBC North office in Yellowknife NWT.
Let me begin with the 2008 election with a story by CBC reporter Lee Selleck:

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/story/2008/10/09/nwt-contract.html

In this story, Mr. Selleck and his friend, NDP candidate Dennis Bevington accuse Richard Bargery, the campaign manager of then Conservative Party candidate Brendan Bell of being unjustly awarded a contract for consulting services.
Mr. Bevington raised this issue in Parliament and received his reply on April 24. The story from Mr. Selleck appeared on CBC October 9 — five months later and five days before voters went to the polls.
The contract involved a contract dispute between pharmacists in the NWT and Yukon and their employers. The Health Canada negotiator had quit and they needed a replacement immediately. When they first called Mr. Bargery, he declined. They called everyone else qualified and they also declined to take the contract. They called Mr. Bargery again and he reluctantly accepted.
In researching the story, Mr. Selleck called every pharmacist in the NWT and Yukon asking questions about how Mr. Bargery handled the conflict between pharmacists and businesses. Every single pharmacist gave glowing reports on Mr. Bargery’s efforts, but none of that was reported. Further, although Mr. Bargery was awarded a contract for $69,304, he invoiced for a little more half of that. That was not reported either.
When CBC broke this story, the regional newspaper did a follow up story on it:

http://www.nnsl.com/frames/newspapers/2008-10/oct13_08br.html

While the newspaper had a much more balanced report of the incident, it appeared on election day. Mr. Bell lost the election by 523 votes.

As we are in the middle of another campaign, I see further bias coming from the CBC North office with Your Take reporter, and known NDP supporter, George Lessard.
Mr. Lessard is tasked with “new media” coverage and here he takes condescending and disparaging remarks about Conservative candidate Sandy Lee:

http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/canadavotes2011/myelection/yourtake/2011/04/nwt-social-media-campaign-report.html

Ms. Lee has been traveling non-stop since this campaign began. The NWT is a vast territory with many small communities accessible only by air. She is a very busy person

Mr. Lessard joined Ms. Lee’s Facebook group page and began posting links to his coverage of the campaign, openly debating with our members and posting other links that further the NDP platform. As one of the administrators of the page, I warned Mr. Lessard to desist posting these links in an effort to smear our party and our candidate.
Today, Mr. Lessard posted the following:

http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/canadavotes2011/myelection/yourtake/2011/04/by-george-lessard-yellowknife-nwtits.html

Mr. Lessard could have simply said that Sandy Lee and Bonnie Dawson did not reply to the survey. Instead, he feels it necessary to write the following:

As the NWT minister for the Status of Women, Sandy Lee defended the rights of women in the territory, then she resigned to run in the federal election as the Conservative candidate.

Today I visited the website of
The Status of Women Council of the NWT to arrange an interview with Executive Director Lorraine Phaneuf. On their front page was their "Five Questions to Candidates" they asked all five federal candidates on issues that effect women... so I paused to read it... and was disappointed to see that Lee did not respond to the questions.

Bad grammar and horrible punctuation aside, there is nothing balanced or even fair about this story.

Mr. Lessard is not a journalist and I don’t expect him to understand the intricacies and complexities of publishing bias during an election, but that does not excuse the CBC for publishing this one-sided view. If Mr. Lessard wants to campaign against the Conservative Party, that’s his right, but we as tax payers should not be funding it.

Mr. Lessard has been permanently banned from our candidate’s Facebook page.

John Agnew and CBC North can take this as notice that during this election, the Conservative Party will not tolerate this blatant bias in publicly-funded reportage.

Thank you for your time, Mr. Lapointe, I know you must be busy, but I look forward to a timely response to this matter.

Sincerely,

Terry Halifax

I suppose they'll use the same method to tell the banks how much interest they will charge customers on credit cards. I don't know why they bother making these ridiculous claims. The fourth place party can't effect any change, especially when their representave has a hard time staying awake on the job.

You're so right David. Although Facebook has grown in popularity throughout the North, Twitter doesn't have much appeal to anyone but the truly geeky. I see people of all ages on Facebook because it's a great way to stay in touch. Making co...mparisons about who has the time to Tweet and click the little "thumbs up" button is only a reflection of which supporters have too much time on their hands. I'd like to see a running tally on which candidate has visited the most communities and knocked on the most doors. That's what wins elections.See More

Totally agree with you guys Terry and David. Sandy definitely is a Woman of Action; she not only does the talk but walk the walk for her firm beliefs in bringing change to the north. And as we all know, online community can be deceiving an...d as reported on CBC news last week that it only costs 5 dollars to buy 1,000 tweeters.(I'm not suggesting anyone is doing this!!!) Terry Halifax is the  Beaufort-Delta Campaign Committee person for Sandy Lee's Conservatives in the Western Arctic Riding.

There was a posting on their Facebook page "Sandy Lee for Western Arctic MP" by Kathy Kim which said in part "...Sandy definitely is a Woman of Action..."

To which I replied "If "...Sandy definitely is a Woman of Action..." then why did she not answer the The Status of Women Council of the NWT's "Five Questions to Candidates" they asked all five federal candidates on issues that effect women in the NWT.
You can read the resulting answers from four of the five candidates here.
http://www.scribd.com/full/53040193?access_key=key-tco0jh86feg3ozj2atj

You can see his full reply below, but in brief he said "...That page is there for Sandy's supporters, not for you to attempt to smear our candidate. Persist and I'll just boot you..."

So I guess that after this posting... I may be "booted" from the page and no longer able to report on what's going on there

And of course, it it had not been for "les voyageurs" paddling the canoes in for the explorers and out with the furs for the Hudsons Bay Company, there might never have been a Northwest Territories.

Léo-Paul Provencher interim Director General of the Fédération Franco-Ténoise speaks to us about the current federal election, the issues important to francophones in the NWT and suggests some question and topics that francophone voters should ask and discuss with the candidates.

Because there are no nationally connected French speaking journalists based in the Northwest Territories (not even one from Radio-Canada) although with some English, the majority of this report is in French.

Five Questions to Candidates

Here is Lorraine Phaneuf, Executive Director talking about the process of gathering both the questions and answers....

Vote for the internet

"It's important that we elect an MP willing to fight for our right to affordable, accessible, and open internet someone who will work towards a comprehensive national internet strategy that is in the best interest of citizens, not big business..."
Vote for the internet
http://bit.ly/i1o13v

"...

Forget the gun registry.

Forget Afghanistan and Libya (most Canadians already have, after all).

The hot button issue of this election is the internet in Canada. Or, rather, the relative lack thereof.

This is particularly true in the Yukon, where we suffer from the very worst of Canada's very bad situation.

The internet in Canada is, simply put, too expensive and too crappy when compared to other developed nations.

Canadians are falling behind other nations in our ability to afford and effectively access information online.

Our access to the internet is controlled by a small group of companies with competing interests such as cable television and traditional telephone services.

Again, this is particularly true in the Yukon. (AND the NWT & Nunavut)

There is growing concern amongst Canadians about this.

This election is about changing that.

It's about making the internet more affordable and the means of how it is provided to us, more transparent. It's about removing the threat of big business and ensuring that our connection to the world remains neutral and open...."

Yellowknife: Social media campaign report

Your Take

Yellowknife: Social media campaign report

Region: Northwest Territories Topics:

By George Lessard (Yellowknife, N.W.T.)

george-52.jpgYesterday's Tweet of the Day?

RT @nwtdennis: @Tuktoyaktuk From our platform: "We will prohibit all forms of usage-based billing (UBB) by Internet Service Providers (ISPs)." In #NWT too.

I picked it as "Tweet of the Day" because NorthWestel's billing rates have been a big topic on the internet and Twitter over the last few weeks, not just in the N.W.T., but in Nunavut and the Yukon too and because @nwtdennis was having a dialogue with constituent @Tuktoyaktuk  and that's what Twitter is for.

On Facebook today, Dennis Bevington (NDP) said, "I will be working hard to attend all of the candidates' forums this campaign. However, sometimes weather or transportation issues (plane issues, flat tires) make it hard to get around the N.W.T. I have only had one weather incident, but fortunately it turned into a good extended visit in Fort Good Hope."

Dennis's Facebook page has 236 likes, up from yesterday's 235 likes; on his personal page he has 1,403 friends, up from 1,388 two days ago. The N.W.T. New Democrats' page has 335 likes today up from 205 likes on Monday.

On Twitter, @nwtdennis posted only seven Tweets today, but then he did tell us he was on the road to Behchoko this morning ... and we all know how poor the cell service is on the highway between Yellowknife and Behchoko...

@nwtdennis's Klout score is now 34, up from yesterday's 32 and now has 73 followers, up from 67 yesterday.

On the "Sandy Lee for Western Arctic MP" Facebook page John Curran, N.W.T. campaign director, and Terry Halifax, Beaufort-Delta campaign committee seem to be the only people (other than Victor Choi & Mark Johnson) of the 61 (56 yesterday) members that post anything to the page...

A really professional PR job John... too bad so few of Sandy's supporters seem to be inclined to post anything...

Does Sandy know how to post on Facebook yet? Oh, that's right sorry John. I see from the members' list that she's not a member of her own page and I cannot give any stats on the number of friends she has on Facebook because I can't find her account. Does she have one? Can anyone tell me?

On Twitter, I see @nwtsandylee posted 18 times since her account opened and has 27 followers. Two postings since yesterday but her Klout score is 32 today, up from 30 yesterday.

Just a tip Sandy... if you learn how and why you need to use #CPC, #NWT, #YZF #CdnPoli and #elxn41 hashtags in your Tweets, you might get your message out to more folks on Twitter and more of your potential voters might find them.

Joe Handly, our ex-premier and erstwhile bridge-building Liberal candidate has sent out 10 Tweets since yesterday... Way to go Joe! But Joe... I see you used #nwt #cdnpoli #elxn41 Hashtags in one message today. Even with an increase of 17 followers since yesterday, maybe you'd get more followers if you used them in every message?

Anyway you've still got a pretty good Klout score of 33, even if it hasn't changed in a while.

Joe has 41 likes on his Facebook page today, up a whopping five from Monday! Funny there are no friends listed... just likes... It looks like a personal account.... but unlike all my friends... it does not show any friends... just 41 likes.

So I can't tell you how many friends Joe has on Facebook because the two pages he's associated with do not display their members.

Joe's Western Arctic Liberal Association Organization Facebook page has 209 likes, up from 205 likes on Monday.

Eli Purchase's (Green) 97 followers have been treated to his 235 Tweets since he opened his account.

On Facebook Eli, like Joe, has a page with no friends, just likes ... and he just hit his 50th!

@nwteli often uses his Tweets to tell his followers about his blog http://nwtgreen.com/ and YouTube.

And with a Klout score now at 41, up from a 39 yesterday, you seem to be doing a great job at using social media and you have today's highest Klout score of all Western Arctic candidates. I guess that comes from the ongoing conversations you have with you followers/supporters.

Way to get your message out Eli!

Still no word on Bonnie Dawson, Animal Alliance Environment Voters Party of Canada candidate getting a Twitter account. If anyone finds one for her, please let me know.

On Twitter I'm @Northern_Clips.

I've agreed to voluntarily produce the all candidate debate/forum for local social action group Alternatives North http://www.alternativesnorth.ca/ but @CBCNorth says
N.W.T. group struggles to host election forum
Alternatives North says only 2 candidates are confirmed
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/story/2011/04/11/western-arctic-cv-election-forums.html
but in the comments section, Eli Purchase (Green)  says
"Contrary to what this article has said, I will be attending this forum. I never declined to attend, I only asked that the forum be held earlier in the evening due to a prior commitment if that were possible. I am going to be at this forum" So only Sandy Lee (CPC) is still said not to be going… but all five candidates are said to be going to the NWT Chamber of Commerce http://www.nwtchamber.com/ all candidate debate/forum

I'm so PO'd with the NWT Chamber for not wanting to webcast their all candidate debate/forum, I did up this http://www.surveymonkey.com survey and put it live...
