It's the aspiring nation on Canada's northern doorstep, a geographic giant with a total population smaller than that of Brandon, Manitoba - but with vast resource potential, an ambitious new coalition government and a green light from its colonial master to become a separate country.

Greenland will take a major stride on Sunday toward independence from Denmark, which has endorsed the adoption of a new system of self-government that gives the 60,000, mostly-Inuit residents of the world's largest island greater control over natural resources and justice, and paves the way toward full nation status within decades.

Significantly, the enhanced home-rule arrangement to be proclaimed on Sunday makes Greenlandic Inuit the official language and enshrines the right of self- determination for island residents under international law.

The historic day - to be witnessed in the capital Nuuk by Nunavut Premier Eva Aariak and Canada's ambassador to Denmark, Peter Lundy - comes in the midst of major upheaval in Greenland's political landscape. A June 2 election handed the island's government to new premier Kuupik Kleist, a Greenlandic Inuit socialist who toppled the once-unshakable ruling party that had held power since Denmark granted the province limited home-rule status in 1979.
